The final witness for the prosecution on Thursday, IRS Agent Haydee Gonzalez, testified that Thompson should not have claimed tens of thousands of dollars in mortgage-interest deductions in his tax returns because he’d never made payments on $219,000 in debt he had at Washington Federal Bank for Savings, which was shut down by federal regulators in December 2017.
“We have to work long-term on how we address this teacher shortage, how we attract and recruit and retain (teachers),” state Sen. Robert Martwick, a Chicago Democrat and one of the bill’s sponsors, said in an interview. “But in the short-term, we’ve got to do something, now, to get teachers into the classroom.”

Rish was convicted of helping with the plot hatched by Edwards, a small-time Kankakee drug dealer, to kidnap Small, the 40-year-old heir to a local media fortune. Edwards took him to a rural area and buried him in a 6-by-3-foot wooden box outfitted with an air pipe, but Small suffocated. Edwards made calls from pay phones to demand money, and police used call-tracing devices and surveillance to nab Edwards and Rish days after the kidnapping.

In bond court Thursday, a lawyer for Villegas, Irena Stefanovski, described him as a father of a 15-year-old and two adult children, including one who is a Chicago police officer. Villegas’ wife offered to post $1,000 for the officer’s release, but Judge Barbara Dawkins said the amount was too low considering the couple also own a restaurant.
Around May 2019, Harris traveled from Texas to Florida with the intention of engaging in sexual conduct with another minor, who was 15 years old, according to the plea agreement. Before taking a flight from Dallas to Orlando on May 2, Harris, who was 19 at the time, planned to meet the 15-year-old minor in Orlando for illegal activity.
