Wortham’s father, Thomas Wortham III, himself a retired Chicago police sergeant, said at Taylor and McGee’s trials in 2014 that he saw much of the attack unfold while in his slippers, first from the doorway of his house as the two men attempted to rob his son, then on the street as he engaged the Floyds in a gunbattle.
Northwest Side Ald. Nick Sposato, 38th, said it wasn’t just what Thompson did for a living that made him a federal target, but the fact he’s a Daley. “I just think he got the royal screw job because of what his name is,” Sposato said. “If his name had been John Smith, they would have said, ‘Pay us what you owe us and we’ll call it even.’”
The Chicago Board of Education approved the name change in March 2021, months after the Chicago Sun-Times identified some 30 Chicago schools named for slaveholders and several other schools that bear the name of someone who held racist or misogynistic attitudes. CPS administrators have vowed to consider a change if a school is named after “individuals who do not represent the values of our students, families, faculty and support staff.”
Thompson, 52, the grandson and nephew of Chicago’s two longest-serving mayors, is charged with falsely claiming mortgage interest deductions on his tax returns and repeatedly lying about lines of credit he received from Washington Federal Bank for Savings, which was shut down by federal regulators in late 2017.
The person who was hit was able to walk away from the scene and received assistance from firefighters, though his or her exact condition was not immediately known, Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said. It wasn’t clear whether the person had been standing on the platform or if they had been standing directly on the tracks; their injuries suggest they may have been clipped by a passing train but that could not be confirmed early Tuesday.
Adrian presided over a three-day bench trial in which Clinton was accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl at a graduation party in Quincy in May. After originally finding Clinton guilty on one count of criminal sexual assault in October, Adrian threw out the conviction last month when Clinton appeared for sentencing, saying there had been “plenty of punishment” and that he wouldn’t impose the mandatory minimum sentence of four years in prison.
On Monday, more than 22 years later, another active member of the City Council, 11th Ward Ald. Patrick Daley Thompson, will be in a similar position as Giles, with the fate of his political career — and perhaps his freedom — in the hands of a federal jury.
