A report Evans and his partner wrote about the interview said they asked Thompson whether he’d been making payments on his loans with Washington Federal, and the alderman answered “Yeah.” But when he was asked to produce canceled checks as proof, Thompson replied, “No, there weren’t any.” He then requested an attorney be present for any further questioning, according to the report.

In recent years the restaurant has become well known for using its outdoor sign to make jokes and, occasionally, political statements — many of which were aimed at former President Donald Trump. Its staff also routinely insults customers, which is something of an attraction, along with its char dogs. The restaurant also has nearly 13,000 followers on Twitter, where it refers to its die-hard fans as #weinerheads.

“We are still early in what will be a lengthy process, but the city and Chicago Police Department have made progress,” the statement said. “We will continue to collaborate with the court monitor, the city of Chicago, the Chicago Police Department and other parties to the consent decree so that progress is made more quickly because, ultimately, lives depend on it. We continue to work collaboratively with the mayor, the city of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department on various other matters.”
