Zach Davies, who started Friday against the Brewers and gave up four runs on six hits in 4⅓ innings in an 8-5 loss, will be a free agent after the season and likely will be gone without an offer. Justin Steele, who starts Saturday, has earned a starting job, and Keegan Thompson and Adbert Alzolay will compete for one in spring training, though both could be in the bullpen depending on whether Hoyer spends on starting pitching. Alec Mills, the proverbial good soldier, will do whatever is asked.
“Just be who we are, because that wasn’t who we are, having all the mental lapses,” Johnson said. “It wasn’t even really too much to talk about. It’s just, ‘Hey, this is what we did wrong. We can’t have it again’. So it wasn’t (any) panic. It wasn’t anything like that. It was just, ‘Fix what needs to be fixed.’ ”
The game got interesting on the first drive of the third quarter. Tagovailoa marched the Terrapins down the field, and Fleet-Davis capped a drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 10-3 Maryland. Illinois then went three-and-out, but Maryland fumbled the ball on its next drive at the Illinois 7 that prevented what appeared to be a certain score.
“I just went back to a little bit more focus,” Cease said. “Don’t take your eye off the target, and it clicked. But that’s baseball. Sometimes it takes a second to get in a groove. But really, wasting pitches like that is unacceptable. So it’s something I’m looking to limit, and I’m going to be able to take what happened (Friday) and finish strong in the season.”
Lorenzo Cain lined into a double play to end the inning, and Frank Schwindel, who came into the night hitting a league-best .440 since Sept. 3, led off the fifth with a solo home run, his 14th of the season. Davies was removed in the bottom of the fifth, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over 4⅓ innings.
“Certainly, high expectations always (for the bullpen), but baseball has a way of humbling you,” Marshall said. “But you’ve seen people who have just locked down and come back to life. Like Aaron Bummer, he’s always been amazing, but he’s been so good lately. And Garrett Crochet and José Ruiz, guys like that who have absolutely taken leaps forward.

The contract, which needs to be approved at a university board of trustees meeting Thursday, is worth $25.6 million for the next six seasons, according to Bret Beherns of WCIU-TV in Champaign. Illinois didn’t announce terms of the deal but said in a release Thursday that the first four years ($16.7 million, according to Beherns) are fully guaranteed, moving Underwood’s total annual compensation into the top 10 nationally.
“We probably would have supported the decision if it was different, if it was made for the right reasons,” Daly said. “Since these allegations arose, I think the Blackhawks as an organization have handled everything in the right way and they’ve taken the proper steps. We’ll see at the end of the day what comes of it.”
“Just try to make one good pitch, one good pitch can get you out of it, and I thought I did make a couple there, but they were just on the edges and up so it gives them a chance to hit those balls in the outfield,” Hendricks said. “So I’ve got to get back down in the zone, kind of like it was last start, more sink on my fastball, and everything will play off that.”
