Thousands of colleges across the country are welcoming both new and returning students back to campus for the fall semester. To coincide with the beginning of another school year, Stacker compiled a list of the best colleges in America usingNiche’s 2021 rankings.
“I can’t think of a more challenging first two years as a manager than what he’s had on his plate, obviously, between last year’s (pandemic season) and the changes that have happened this year as well,” Hoerner said. “If there is learning by experience, he definitely has gotten every experience so far.
“(It was) just making sure that we focus on little things,” cornerback Kindle Vildor said. “The stuff that we got beat on, it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, this person was just better or stuff like that.’ It was little, small fundamental things that we didn’t make sure we took care of. So we pretty much buckled in on that this whole week to get ready for Sunday.”
“We haven’t clinched yet, so everyone knows there’s a lot at stake here,” Sox starter Lance Lynn said. “We’ve got to play good baseball down the stretch. We’re in a good, comfortable lead (in the division), but it would be nice to clinch here soon so we can line things up the way we need to at the end.
“It was really cool,” Steele said. “I really enjoyed hitting my whole entire life, really loved it growing up, high school and stuff. Getting a hit in the big leagues was a thing I wanted to accomplish. If they get rid of the DH next year, I can always say I’ve got a big-league hit, so I was really excited.”
Duke was efficient on both sides of the ball early, scoring on six of its first eight possessions behind Gunnar Holmberg, who completed 31 of 44 passes for a career-high 314 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, the Blue Devils defense forced Northwestern into a punt or a turnover on its first seven drives.
While the Irish struggled on offense, their defense, maligned for giving up four plays of 60 yards or longer in its first two victories, tightened things somewhat against the Boilermakers. For the third straight game, linebacker JD Bertrand finished with double-digit tackles with 12, two more than Hamilton, and the Irish recorded three sacks.
“I was disappointed by the umpire’s decision,” La Russa said before Saturday’s game against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field. “Once that happens, this is all automatic. I just don’t think that there’s been enough information that’s really been distributed. We’ve hit fewer batters than any team in Major League Baseball (47). And most importantly, if you watched how we pitched Ohtani for three days, we avoided the middle of the plate. In, away, up, down, we avoided the middle. He was 2-for-13. He struck out seven times. That’s the way we pitched to him.
“If you have a really strong home record, it makes sense,” La Russa said. “But — I’m not bragging, it’s just fact — in ‘11 (with the St. Louis Cardinals), we were the wild card, so we had to play on the road against (top-seeded) Philadelphia (and) on the road against (the second-seeded Milwaukee Brewers). And we won in six games (against the Brewers). My point is that we would love to have home-field advantage because you can see our numbers are better here. But we’ve played well on the road at times — most times.
The Wolverines (3-0) scored touchdowns on their first nine drives, eight of them on the ground. The 10th drive also included a touchdown run, but it was called back for a holding penalty and Michigan turned the ball over on downs. The Wolverines never punted.
