The 6-foot-2, 194-pound defenseman will kick off his Hawks career by playing in the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase against the Minnesota Wild at TRIA Rink at Treasure Island Center in St. Paul, Minn., this weekend. Second-round pick Colton Dach — the younger brother of center Kirby Dach — also will participate in the two-game exhibition.
“He would provide a great boost, just a player of his caliber,” defensive lineman Bilal Nichols said. “I say it time and time again: In my opinion, he’s the best at his position in football. Just having a player like that, it’s always going to give you a boost. Being able to see him back out on the field after such a long time, generally you would be happy for him as a teammate.”
“This is the first time obviously for Maryland to go there to play — which completes us now having been to every team in the Big Ten with an away game,” Locksley said. “It starts Big Ten play for us, which is another season for us, different than the out-of-conference games. It’s a Big Ten opener, national TV audience, so it will be the show.”
“I’ve been intentionally walked twice, which I mean, I’ve had a couple but it’s nothing I’d say I’m used to, especially in the big leagues. But just knowing that they know of me — guys get to first base, like, ‘Frank, you’re doing great, keep it going, happy to see it,’ stuff like that means a lot,” Schwindel said.

The $20,000 fee is sizable compared with what the Fire pay to use Soldier Field. According to the lease agreement between the Fire and the Chicago Park District, which operates the iconic lakefront venue, the Fire pay a base fee of $10,000 per match (excluding expenses) with an annual increase of 3%, according to a copy of the document acquired via FOIA.
Tune out the noise and sometimes read between the lines to understand what is going on. The Bears aren’t going into a lot of specifics about where Fields needs to improve in order for a depth-chart change. It’s likely they want to accentuate the positives — and there are plenty — while choosing to keep instructive points private. It will become unavoidable, of course, if the team gets further into the schedule and the offense is struggling, as it did the last two seasons.
“I know Roberto Clemente Jr. a little bit from some of the stuff we worked with him in the past, and it’s such a good family, and if I can even just be a speck of sand on the Clemente legacy of what he was able to do for a long time, that’s a win in my books because he was — from what I understand, everything he did philanthropically was was unbelievable,” Hendriks said. “And I think he really was a trendsetter in that realm.”
“Those three or four plays against an offense like that, against a quarterback like that, is where you get exposed,” Desai said. “You watch all 16 games played in Week 1, there’s a lot of those mishaps happening. Unfortunately, that’s not what we pride ourselves on. And our guys know that.”
Week 1 starter Jason Peters was back at practice Wednesday afternoon at Halas Hall, striving to get ready to play Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals at Soldier Field. But Peters, who suffered a quadriceps injury in the first half of the opening loss to the Los Angeles Rams, remained limited and might have an uphill climb to be ready to play a full game.
