The Boilermakers counter with junior defensive end George Karlaftis (eight tackles, three QB hurries) and linebacker Jaylan Alexander (nine tackles) on defense. “With the bullpen we have, when you think about it, yeah, it could be, if we go down to the bullpen,” he said. “But if you’ve got a starter that’s hot and throwing well, it’s hard to take the pedal off that. But once again, it’s my job to pitch. I don’t make the managerial decisions. That’s not my job description.”
Northwestern (1-1) has recovered a fumble in each of its first two games, a loss to Michigan State in Big Ten play and a home win against Indiana State. Last year the Wildcats ranked in the top 20 of the Bowl Subdivision ranks in forcing turnovers, fueled by safety Brandon Joseph – an Associated Press first-team All-American – tying for the national lead with six interceptions.
“Nobody gives you a chance, so there’s no pressure whatsoever,” Hammock said. “The only thing that you should feel is, `Can I go out there and play my best and get Michigan to respect and recognize who we are as a football program?′ That should be the excitement. Embrace it.”

Tyler Boyd, meanwhile, might be the most underrated of the Bengals receivers. Bears quarterback Andy Dalton played with Boyd for four years in Cincinnati, including a two-season stretch in 2018 and 2019, during which the receiver had 166 catches, 2,074 yards and 12 touchdowns. Dalton lit up this week when asked about Boyd.

The 6-foot-2, 194-pound defenseman will kick off his Hawks career by playing in the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase against the Minnesota Wild at TRIA Rink at Treasure Island Center in St. Paul, Minn., this weekend. Second-round pick Colton Dach — the younger brother of center Kirby Dach — also will participate in the two-game exhibition.
“He would provide a great boost, just a player of his caliber,” defensive lineman Bilal Nichols said. “I say it time and time again: In my opinion, he’s the best at his position in football. Just having a player like that, it’s always going to give you a boost. Being able to see him back out on the field after such a long time, generally you would be happy for him as a teammate.”
“This is the first time obviously for Maryland to go there to play — which completes us now having been to every team in the Big Ten with an away game,” Locksley said. “It starts Big Ten play for us, which is another season for us, different than the out-of-conference games. It’s a Big Ten opener, national TV audience, so it will be the show.”
