“It’s just about communicating to those guys and making sure I’m getting ahead of that,” Ross said. “The other thing that I try not to do, one of my things is if you go deep the day before you’re not sitting the next day, so I told him that, like, ‘Hey, you hit a home run today, and I’m going to go against everything in my gut.’ But it makes the most sense long term.”
“Everybody’s trying to look out for the health of the players and if we stop-go-stop-go, the pitching is what’s not all the way stretched out yet for a lot of teams,” manager David Ross said. “So with the conditions, with the elements and not being able to be on the field — we all want to play, but postponing is probably the smart thing to do.”
“It’s like (they think), ‘Wow, I think I’m playing hard,’ but it’s not good enough,” Donovan said. “These moments where you’re playing against really good, quality teams, you just get to a point where it’s like — what are you competing for?”
With Monday’s off day, the Cubs won’t need a fifth starter until April 16 at Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies. Mills could be an option for that game, but in the meantime the Cubs lose a proven multi-inning, versatile arm in the bullpen. Mills, 30, pitched multiple innings in seven of his 12 relief appearance last season, complementing his 20 starts. Without Mills, the Cubs might need to do more mixing and matching in shorter spurts with right-hander Keegan Thompson and left-hander Daniel Norris as their main long-relief options.
“My goal was always to play at the best capacity possible, and I know that I had some qualities in me and my game, that’s why I tried to help the team/,” Hossa said. “But I never thought about the Hall of Fame, I never thought about being in the rafters with the great ones playing in the United Center. But I guess I got lucky to play with the great players that I did, I had accomplishments we did with the teams through my career in Chicago.
Chris Hendriksen, 44, and his family — like many Cubs families — never miss an opening day. He is a Chicago native who lives in Cincinnati. They have attended every year for as long as they can remember, and their kids, Audrey, 7, and Daniel, 9, have come every year of their lives. Daniel was even in attendance when his mom Susy, 42, was pregnant with him.
“You don’t know how the game is going to change over time,” Heyward said. “It could happen quickly or not. But (the media) is an important element of the game, just for players to see. You guys have a workplace here too. There is a sense of accountability, but I also think there’s a sense of fun — a guy has a big moment in a game the night before or that night, and we can immediately meet face to face, get a little reaction.”
