Earlier in the week, manager David Ross said he hoped Contreras (right knee sprain) would be able to return for the weekend series against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field, where he could be used as a designated hitter until ready to return behind the plate. But after indicating Wednesday that Contreras might want a few at-bats in games before being activated from the IL, Ross reiterated as much before Friday’s series opener. Contreras has missed 14 games because of the injury.

Cook County, where the most recent round of applications closed in April, had allocated more than three-quarters of available funding by Aug. 26. And the Illinois Housing Development Authority, which administers the state program, paid out more than 40% of its available funding by Aug. 13 to applicants who applied in periods that closed in June and August.

Vega, 26, was killed Aug. 31, 2020, after the officers’ unmarked squad car was fired upon in the 1300 block of West 19th Street, according to court records and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates police-involved shootings.

In the counties south of Springfield’s Sangamon County, only one, Monroe, bordering St. Louis, has reported more than half of its residents being fully vaccinated. Several run in the 25% to 35% range, with Alexander County at the southern tip of the state, which saw the nation’s largest drop in population according to recent federal census results, reporting 16.2% of its residents fully vaccinated.

The shooter fled the scene, but witnesses told police they believed Garibay was the shooter. Garibay and the first victim had gotten into a physical confrontation earlier in the week over an unknown issue, police said. The man who was killed was not involved in the initial fight, they said.

“DoorDash has stood with the City of Chicago throughout the pandemic, waiving fees for restaurants, providing $500,000 in direct grants, creating strong earning opportunities, and delivering food and other necessities to communities in need,” DoorDash spokesman Taylor Bennett said in an emailed statement. “This lawsuit will cost taxpayers and deliver nothing.”
