If the Cubs want multi-inning options behind the starting group, this trio can give them length. Smyly eventually could work his way into the rotation. After reporting to camp Saturday, he’s a little behind, though, making him a likely bullpen arm until his workload gets to a starter level. Thompson is vying for a starting spot and should not be ruled out for opening the year in the rotation. But it would make sense to have the hard thrower as a multi-inning weapon, a role in which he thrived last year for the Cubs. Thompson notably still has minor-league options, as does Steele.
“It really had nothing to do at all with Ayo,” Donovan said. “With Lonzo and Alex being out, if you would have told us back in training camp that Ayo was going to be our starting point guard, I don’t know if anybody would know what that would look like.
