Aybar, 24, was claimed off waivers by the Yankees from the Colorado Rockies on March 20 after being designated for assignment two days earlier. He went 2-6 with a 6.22 ERA, 53 strikeouts and two saves in 49 relief outings for the Rockies’ Double-A team, the Hartford Yard Goats, last season.
If the Cubs want multi-inning options behind the starting group, this trio can give them length. Smyly eventually could work his way into the rotation. After reporting to camp Saturday, he’s a little behind, though, making him a likely bullpen arm until his workload gets to a starter level. Thompson is vying for a starting spot and should not be ruled out for opening the year in the rotation. But it would make sense to have the hard thrower as a multi-inning weapon, a role in which he thrived last year for the Cubs. Thompson notably still has minor-league options, as does Steele.
“It really had nothing to do at all with Ayo,” Donovan said. “With Lonzo and Alex being out, if you would have told us back in training camp that Ayo was going to be our starting point guard, I don’t know if anybody would know what that would look like. He has been incredible, man, but I’ve also asked a lot of him in a lot of ways.”
The school has been rocked by allegations that began to publicly surface in 2020 from hundreds of men who said they were sexually assaulted by the late Robert Anderson, a campus doctor who spent nearly 40 years at Michigan. He died in 2008. In January, the school announced a $490 million settlement with Anderson’s accusers — a separate legal action from the class-action suit brought by Josephine Graham, a University of Michigan senior. Both agreements were reached under the supervision of a court-appointed mediator, the school said.
It’s a projection by the Bears as Bates has only four career regular-season starts and two more in the postseason. They were not the only team to see potential in the former undrafted free agent from Penn State, who also had visits with the Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots. Ultimately, he signed with the Bears. The Bills tendered Bates at the low level of $2.433 million and that gives them only the right of first refusal.

Notes: Correa gets $35.1 million annually. He would earn $100,000 for World Series MVP, $50,000 for League Championship Series MVP and $100,000 each for making the All-Star team or winning a Gold Glove or Silver Slugger. He has a limited no-trade provision allowing him through to block deals to five teams this year, then a full no-trade provision.

Jim Larrañaga’s seat was heating up after three straight losing seasons in Coral Gables, Fla., but he persuaded talented guard Isaiah Wong, Kameron McGusty and Sam Waardenburg to return. When Larrañaga landed former DePaul point guard Charlie Moore from the transfer portal, it turned the Hurricanes into a contender in the ACC (they finished fourth). All four players average more than 30 minutes, and the Hurricanes have committed just seven turnovers in two NCAA Tournament games. After squeezing out of a first-round nail-biter against USC, the Hurricanes weren’t intimidated when drawn into a second-round matchup against future lottery pick Jabari Smith and No. 2 seed Auburn in the Round of 32, earning a 79-61 win.
