“Last year, first full season, didn’t really want to rush anything,” he said. “This year, as far as I know, I’ll be good for more extended outings. Hopefully a spot start every now and then, but I haven’t heard anything in relation to that. But really whatever role they cast me into in, I can’t wait to fill it.

“I would just say going to the tournament, he always lets us know every day, hey, just be you,” Hurricanes guard Isaiah Wong said. “At the end of the day, just play free and just play together as a team and just help the team as much as possible. Play hard, and just be yourself at the end of the day. And with that feeling it just makes us even better as a team.”

His defense isn’t an upgrade over Heyward, which further makes Ortega’s roster fit questionable unless the Cubs value him as a left-handed bench bat.

“I’m expecting a lot from Dylan,” Sox pitching coach Ethan Katz said last week. “Obviously the year he had (in 2021), we need him, and I know he wants to go and take another step. His development, there’s a lot to be had. I’m excited with what he did last year, and I’m also excited with what still needs to be done.”
