Around 8:35 p.m., the “L” operator was about to continue the train’s route south when he heard someone asking for help about a cellphone that had fallen into the tracks at the Edgewater station, authorities said. He exited the train to help and when he turned to look at the tracks, someone pushed him from behind into the tracks, according to officials.
House Republican Leader Jim Durkin on Monday continued to criticize the Democrats for passing last year’s Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today (or SAFE-T) Act. Democrats say the law, which includes an end to cash bail for nonviolent offenses beginning in 2023, is meant to address inequities in the criminal justice system, while Republicans have argued it weakens the power of law enforcement and emboldens criminals.
Under the state’s election code, a political committee that makes an expenditure for a pamphlet, circular, or radio, television and print ad that mentions the name of a candidate in the next election without that candidate’s permission “shall ensure that the name of the political committee paying for any part of the communication, including, but not limited to, its preparation and distribution, is identified clearly within the communication.”
Officers responding to the scene found an 18-year-old Zion man dead. The driver and the other passengers — two males ages 21 and 16, and an 18-year-old woman — were taken to the hospital with what police said appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Lightfoot made the announcements Monday as she continues to field criticism over Chicago’s gun violence. The city experienced major crime spikes in 2020 and 2021. Crime has gone down in the first quarter of 2022, though Lightfoot, who faces reelection early next year, has said the administration will continue pushing to reduce street violence.
