The first to be rejected was Jeffrey Mears, who voted to parole Paula Sims, a woman convicted in 1990 of killing her two daughters, and Zelma King, who was convicted of three homicides. That rejection was followed by the voting down of Eleanor Wilson, the godmother of former President Barack Obama’s children, who was voted down 31-15, with 14 Democrats joining 17 of the senate’s 18 Republicans in voting no. Twelve Democrats chose not to vote.
Hospitals and long-term care facilities including nursing homes would be able to set guidelines for visitors, such as requiring health screenings, mask-wearing and vaccination. If a health care facility determined a visitor posed a risk to patients or workers, they could be denied visitation, though the denial would have to be given in writing.
Through Medicaid, Illinois already spends $2.5 billion per year to care for about 45,000 people in nursing homes, the state reported, an average cost of about $55,000 — plus another $880 million in federal funds in the first year of COVID. Advocates say the new money would go directly to patient care, rather than to corporate owners.
Like the plan Pritzker laid out in his February budget address, the House Democrats’ proposal would suspend the 1% state sales tax on groceries for a year, give homeowners a one-time property tax rebate of up to $300, and pause an inflation-based increase in the gas tax. The House plan also includes direct payments to taxpayers, but on a much more limited basis than the Senate plan.
“This speaks to a much more bumpy, difficult, violent, challenging future for the coming generation if we don’t get some things right — here at home, in Europe, in Asia and Latin America because what’s happening there is not isolated,” the former president said.

McCarthy was recently working as a security consultant for a Logan Square marijuana dispensary. In 2012, with McCarthy’s support, Chicago decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana. Still, police continued to make thousands of arrests each year under McCarthy, with Black people and Latinos disproportionately targeted.
