Junior guard Caroline Madden never backs down for Geneva.

Any time the Vikings walk onto the court, especially at this time of the season, there’s no question who will take on the premium role of defending the opposing team’s best player.

“I enjoy the challenge,” Madden said. “I think defense is where I shine. That’s where I really help our team. Taking the best player is how I make a big impact on this team.”

Right away, Madden an impact Thursday night in the Class 4A Glenbard West Sectional championship game. And her assignment was Brooke Carlson, Batavia’s star junior guard.

But Madden corralled a steal and sped in for a layup for the game’s second basket. The Vikings didn’t look back either, with the defense setting the tone for a 53-38 victory.

It was Geneva’s third win this winter over the Bulldogs.

“I think our press and our defense really give us our energy,” Madden said. “I think it brings up the energy level in the whole gym. That’s how we really get going.”

Leah Palmer scored 18 points as Geneva (29-3) advanced to play at 7 p.m. Monday in the Schaumburg Supersectional against Barrington, a 47-30 winner over Rockford Guilford.

Lauren Slagle added 14 points for the Vikings and Madden had eight. Carlson still led all scorers with 19 for Batavia (21-12) but only eight came in the first three quarters.

Geneva applied the defense from the outset in building a 9-0 lead. Batavia was never able to recover and make a substantial run.

“They’re just in a different place right now,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said of her team’s focus. “That’s them. We talk about a lot of things, but they’re doing a nice job of being focused on the moment, not looking ahead.

“They’re just in it. We needed toughness and we needed to play together. Our kids followed through on both.”

Meadows heaped praise on the role Madden plays for the team.

While Madden may not produce the gaudy numbers of Palmer, Slagle or Cassidy Arni on a consistent basis, Meadows knows her true value to the team.

“Caroline is a complete stud,” Meadows said. “I’ve said this all year long, the things she does for our team are remarkable. We’re not the team we are without Caroline Madden.

“She probably doesn’t get enough credit, but if she’s not on the court, we’re different.”

Meadows also knows to not even ask if Madden wants the challenge of guarding somebody like Carlson.

“She wants that assignment,” Meadows said. “She doesn’t want anybody else but the best kid. She gets mad when she gives one up.”

That’s one reason why, when Madden isn’t among the team’s high scorers, she still knows she’s contributing.

“It means a lot for sure, especially when I have a game where I don’t have as many points,” Madden said. “To know I still have that impact on the court even if it’s not scoring means a lot.”

Batavia, meanwhile, cut the deficit to nine points twice in the second quarter. The Bulldogs, however, trailed by double figures the entire second half.

“The margin for error against them is always very, very small,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said. “They’re really good. The pressure they turn on is really good. It makes you want to do things a little bit faster than you should.

“It makes you do more than you have to, and that’s when you get in trouble.”

After losing last season in the sectional semifinals, the Vikings are back within a win of the state finals.

“Last year was definitely upsetting,” Madden said. “Sectional champions this year, it’s incredible.”
