They came into the game just 2-3 this summer after splitting their exhibition games in Las Vegas before the loss to France. They had rarely looked sharp while navigating roster changes, a game cancelation for coronavirus safety concerns and the absence of Jrue Holiday, Khris Middleton and Booker until the eve of their opener because those three had played in the NBA Finals.
The metric mile wasn’t quite the breeze that everyone expected, given Ledecky’s longtime dominance in an event that was finally added to the Olympic program for these games. She built a big lead right from the start, then worked hard to hold off American teammate Erica Sullivan’s blazing finish.
“We had our talk (Monday) about DHing and playing outfield,” La Russa said. “My concern right away, not only was he moving around out there but he really ran hard to first a couple times today so I’d be concerned, so (Wednesday) he’s DHing definitely. I’ll make sure his legs aren’t tight before he gets in there. We just have to, not going to say ease his way back, but carefully play him.”
“The analogy I always hear for something like this, you go to spring training and you give the guys, if you count the days in February, almost six weeks of practice time,” La Russa said. “And now, right when it’s the end of the last two months and you’re going to give a guy two weeks? That’s asking a lot. I think in the end you count on the experts that are watching him, watching bat speed and timing and comparing it to where he is normally. But I think it would be a mistake to rush him, whether it’s physically or baseball-wise.”
“It’s similar to a divorce, but it’s business relationship where multiple parties realize that they just can’t be together anymore,” said Darren Heitner, a sports and entertainment attorney based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. “You try to come to a resolution where perhaps nobody feels great about it, but at least there’s something where they feel as though they’re getting some fair value out of the equation.”
The Milwaukee Bucks star before Game 5 of the NBA Finals earlier this month said, “When I think about like, ‘Yeah I did this.’ You know, ‘I’m so great. I had 30, I had 25-10-10,’ or whatever the case might be. Because you’re going to think about that. … Usually the next day you’re going to suck. Simple as that. Like, the next few days you’re going to be terrible. And I figured out a mindset to have that, when you focus on the past, that’s your ego.
“We don’t normalize burnout in athletics at all, on any stage, any level,” Woods said. “Even when NBA players try to sit out and just take a break, we fine them, because we’re fans and hey, we want our money’s worth tonight and fans pay to come see you play, so you cannot sit. We put all this pressure on our athletes and a way in which it takes self out of it for them. So now they’re just doing it for everyone except them. When you take yourself out of something, it’s hard to enjoy it. It doesn’t matter how good you are at anything, if it’s not fun anymore it’s gonna be hard as hell to do.”
“I’m the starter,” Dalton said Tuesday. “I knew I signed a one-year deal. And I knew I was going to come in and be the starter, regardless of the situation. That’s my focus. I’m not worried about all the stuff that’s going to be going on with Justin. Because that doesn’t affect me. At the end of the day, it’s what I’m going to be doing.”
Fleury was awarded the Vezina Trophy this season after a 26-10-0 record and recording a 1.98 goals-against average, helping lead the Knights to the NHL semifinals. He was benched in Game 4 after a costly puck-handling mistake in Game 3, and the Knights went on to lose the series to the Montreal Canadians.
We invest so much in this facility and all of the state-of-the-art resources, and all of it is for one thing — to make our players better. We acquire the right players and develop them once they’re here, and we’re lucky our ownership has given us all of these assets to do that. From the training room to the weight room to things we do with recovery to nutrition, it’s all right here. We have one of the top facilities in the NFL, and our players will be able to utilize that probably, looking at the timeline of the season, in one of the most taxing times on their body. So to be able to have all of this at our disposal for them to recover is huge.
