Much as they did in the final, the Americans dominated through most of the five-day tournament. They played nine games and only lost one. Plum, the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history, led the way in this one, as well, scoring 55 points over the nine games. She scored all five of her points in the final early to stake the U.S. to a lead it never relinquished.
Markkanen, 24, on one hand put together a career year offensively in 2020-21, shooting a career best 48% from the field and 40% from 3, but also hada career-low 13.6 points, 5.3 rebounds as his playing time dwindled coming off the bench. This season also exposed more of his limitations — mainly defensively and staying on the floor — and he is not a tight fit next to Vučević in the frontcourt.

“I feel like I’ve always been really consistent in that,” Bryant said. “Sometimes the narrative out there has never been right, and it’s been frustrating for me to see some of that. But deep down in my heart, I know I’ve had some of the best memories here and the best times in my life. She continued to work out during the lockdown, trying to keep her body in shape so she would be ready when competition resumed. She also provided lots of content to her blog and YouTube channel, offering insights on fashion, photography, professional sports and her constant travels. In one episode after her Turkish league resumed, she gave a tour of her Istanbul neighborhood and took viewers to the fitting for her wedding dress, which she helped design.
