Virtue learned about her close contact a few days after arriving in Tokyo and immediately was remanded to “COVID jail,” as quarantine has been derisively referred to here. For the next five days, she remained inside her room at all times, unable to even step outside for fresh air or grab food. Instead, she had meals dropped at her door by UberEats or U.S. volleyball members.
In all, Dressel could leave Tokyo with six medals, which would be two short of Michael Phelps’ historic eight golds in 2008. He’s been advertised as one of the faces of the Summer Games and a focus of media coverage when he’d rather “just shut up and swim,” as he put it before the Olympics.
“He saw a first-pitch slider that he fouled off, so I felt comfortable going up with a fastball,” Hendriks said. “I didn’t get it quite in enough and this is why he was the All-Star starting catcher this year. The guy hits fastball. The guy does a good job but I trust my fastball to anybody. Today it didn’t work out unfortunately. It just sucks because those guys spent nine, 10 innings out there in this heat, grinding it out to a point where I couldn’t get my job done and it was just frustrating.”
“He’s an interesting guy because he’s so intrinsically motivated to be the very best,” Shuey said. “So for me, it’s to be a support for that, to challenge him, he sets the stamp — the crazy thing is those guys that are great and elite, they typically are going to be their own toughest critic.
“At the end of the day, I can erase 2020 and put it behind me because it’s done and over with. Now I’m going to look forward to this year and come in with a better, positive mindset. (I’ll bring) a little more energetic, happy mindset and try to give the Bears and my teammates the best version of myself.”
“The rules are the same for most people, but every now and then there’s some outliers, guys who’ve been in the organization for 17 years and won a few MVPs, where they can be in conversations at a different, higher level,” Rodgers said. “I’m not asking for anything that other great quarterbacks across the last few decades have not gotten, the opportunity to just be in conversation.”
