In all, Dressel could leave Tokyo with six medals, which would be two short of Michael Phelps’ historic eight golds in 2008. He’s been advertised as one of the faces of the Summer Games and a focus of media coverage when he’d rather “just shut up and swim,” as he put it before the Olympics.
“He saw a first-pitch slider that he fouled off, so I felt comfortable going up with a fastball,” Hendriks said. “I didn’t get it quite in enough and this is why he was the All-Star starting catcher this year. The guy hits fastball. The guy does a good job but I trust my fastball to anybody. Today it didn’t work out unfortunately. It just sucks because those guys spent nine, 10 innings out there in this heat, grinding it out to a point where I couldn’t get my job done and it was just frustrating.”
“He’s an interesting guy because he’s so intrinsically motivated to be the very best,” Shuey said. “So for me, it’s to be a support for that, to challenge him, he sets the stamp — the crazy thing is those guys that are great and elite, they typically are going to be their own toughest critic.
“At the end of the day, I can erase 2020 and put it behind me because it’s done and over with. Now I’m going to look forward to this year and come in with a better, positive mindset. (I’ll bring) a little more energetic, happy mindset and try to give the Bears and my teammates the best version of myself.”
“The rules are the same for most people, but every now and then there’s some outliers, guys who’ve been in the organization for 17 years and won a few MVPs, where they can be in conversations at a different, higher level,” Rodgers said. “I’m not asking for anything that other great quarterbacks across the last few decades have not gotten, the opportunity to just be in conversation.”

In a surprising opening to the offseason, the Hawks continued to put their stated “rebuild” plan in the rear view mirror, adding another veteran forward to a team that’s already acquired defenseman Seth Jones and goaltender Marc André-Fleury, who is reportedly considering all options, including retirement. They made another subtraction Wednesday, sending defenseman Nikita Zadorov to the Calgary Flames for a third-round pick in 2022, erasing the memory of another dismal trade — for Brandon Saad — that didn’t pan out.
Thriveworks, a counseling, psychology, and psychiatry services with more than 300 locations, found that one in three elite athletes suffer from anxiety and depression. In an analysis of more than 18,000 data points from print, online, broadcast and social media sources covering track and field, swimming, tennis, gymnastics and soccer, 69% of negative mentions were about female athletes compared to 31% about male athletes.
An Olympic worker disinfects and cleans the weightlifting bar after an athlete finished a lift at the Tokyo International Forum in Tokyo during the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics on July 24, 2021. After decades of rampant doping, bribery, vote-rigging and corruption at weight lifting’s highest levels, the International Olympic Committee finally took action last year by threatening to drop the sport from the Games in the coming months if the International Weightlifting Federation does not introduce a host of fixes, including rigorous drug testing measures and governance reforms. Vaccination prospects for younger people have improved, and some can get their shots organized by work places and colleges, while others still wait based on seniority. But there are also concerns over hesitancy among the young, with surveys showing many have doubts, in part due to false rumors about side effects.
