The coaching search included ownership, front office staff, nine current players, the team’s three assistant coaches and a sports psychologist. Petrucelli called the interview process “very intensive, very thorough,” while Lynch said the search committee’s decision to hire Petrucelli was “truly a consensus.”

The players and teams are far apart on luxury tax thresholds and rates. The teams have told the union they will not increase salary arbitration eligibility, will not decrease revenue sharing and will not add new methods for players to accrue service time, which players said are needed to prevent teams from holding players back to delay free agency.

“To my teammates, past and current, you are the icing on the beautiful cake we call our job; football,” Rodgers wrote in the post. “The friendships that we have will transcend our collective time in this game and I am so thankful for the role that each of you have played in making my life that much better. I love you guys, and cherish the memories we’ve made.”

The Cubs bolstered their organizational depth last year with trade deadline moves, providing an infusion of talent, particularly at the lower levels. Top prospect Brennen Davis is on track to make his MLB debut at some point this season, while left-hander Brailyn Marquez’s future impact remains in question after not pitching last year in large part because of shoulder issues. Marquez, a top-100 prospect going into 2020 and 2021, did not pitch above High A beyond ⅔ big-league innings in 2020, and it’s unclear how the Cubs could use him this season.

“The thing that Cindy did was acknowledge the wrongdoing and apologize for the wrongdoing,” Rapinoe said. “It was well within Sunil’s ability to not discriminate and to pay us fairly and equally. It was well within Carlos’ ability to do that, and they made choices not to. … I think Cindy has shown a lot of strength in that, and I think the other two, frankly, just showed a ton of weakness and showed really their true colors in allowing this to happen for so long.”

“Big Ten Conference coaches and student-athletes are expected to display the highest level of sportsmanship conduct,” Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren said in a statement. “I am grateful for the partnership with Michigan Athletics Director, Warde Manuel and Wisconsin Athletics Director, Chris McIntosh. Our expectation is that the incident yesterday will provide our coaches and student-athletes with the opportunity to reflect, learn and move forward in a manner that demonstrates decorum and leadership on and off of the court.”

Following the announcement by the racing stewards, Churchill Downs issued a statement declaring Mandaloun the Kentucky Derby winner and congratulating owner and breeder Juddmonte Farms, trainer Brad Cox and jockey Florent Geroux. Cox becomes the first Louisville native to win the most famous race in the sport, and Mandaloun’s owners will receive the $1.8 million winner’s purse.

The Cardinals’ Paul Goldschmidt, the Yankees’ Jameson Taillon, the Reds’ Sonny Gray, the Royals’ Whit Merrifield, the Twins’ Taylor Rogers and the Brewers’ Brent Suter also were among the players who arrived for the bargaining session at Roger Dean Stadium, the vacant spring training home of St. Louis and the Miami Marlins. Clark and the players conferred with Bruce Meyer, the union’s chief negotiator, in the right field parking lot before entering the ballpark.
