By many mechanical measures, these Games were a success. They were, in fact, quite safe — albeit in the carefully modulated, dress-up-for-company way that authoritarian governments always do best. The local volunteers, as is usually the case, were delightful, helpful and engaging, and they received high-profile accolades at the closing.

“With AK and Marc, obviously, they’re going for it,” LaVine said. “They trust in me, they trust in DeMar, they trust in this group, and it just means a lot going into the last year of my contract that they’re putting a team around us that can compete.’’
“I didn’t think we competed in the first half,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. “In the second half, we scored 52 points against the best defensive team in the league. I don’t like saying we’ll learn from a loss, but I think we’ll learn from this. We competed harder (in the second half) but we couldn’t get over that 10-point stretch.”

Torres, a Guadalajara native, made his professional debut with Atlas when he was 16 and has made 108 appearances across all competitions for the club. In December he helped the Foxes come from behind to beat León in the two-legged final of the Liga MX playoffs. He also has represented the Mexican national team at the youth and senior levels.
“It will get me through the end of the season,” LaVine said. “Then in the offseason I’ll be able to take care of it, try and get myself to 100%. But this season is important enough for me personally, I’ll be able to go out there and play, do what I’m able to do still.”
“It hurts, I won’t lie,” Humphries said. “I gave every ounce of everything I had to the last two days and it wasn’t there. I’m proud of the work that we put in and what we put into it. It sucks and it’s infuriating to know that it wasn’t good enough, but at the end of the day, that’s racing. We can’t be fearful of not being the best. Both Kaysha and I had giant targets on our back coming in and I’m so proud of what we did together.”
Kamila Valieva led the Russian team to a victory in last week’s team event, and the U.S. finished second. Soon after, a positive doping test for the 15-year-old skater was disclosed. CAS allowed her to continue skating at the women’s event, but the International Olympic Committee said it would not award medals in any events in which she finished among the top three.
