Starting pitcher depth becomes more important, too, with Miley and Adbert Alzolay (right lat strain, 60-day IL) banged up. Right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. has pitched well in three Cactus League games and is positioned to be insurance at Triple A, potentially joining fellow nonroster invitee, right-hander Adrian Sampson, in the Iowa Cubs rotation. Leiter, who has a 1.35 ERA in 6⅔ innings, is scheduled to start Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels
“That’s the negative, is that you have very little time to prepare,” Berhalter said. “Guys will come over. They will have been playing on the weekend, and we’ll get them literally a week before the World Cup, and that’s a challenge. On the positive side, if we advance, you get a little bit more rest as you head into the next phase.”
“Had good, honest conversations face-to-face with Lucas,” Hahn said. “(Assistant general manager) Jeremy Haber as well did. And frankly and perhaps most interestingly, so did (Chairman) Jerry Reinsdorf. He and Lucas met 1-on-1, had a nice conversation about how negotiations sometimes get a little bogged down and tried to search for solutions out of it.
Culloton also said the family will not shortchange the Cubs if it lands Chelsea, a club with a massive payroll that has frequently operated at a loss. The family views the teams as entirely separate enterprises, and despite the worries of some Cubs fans, financial decisions made for one won’t affect the other, he said.
DeRozan passed the 2,000 point mark for the second time in his 13-year career, and became the sixth player in Bulls history to score 50 or more points in a game, joining Chet Walker, Zach LaVine and Jamal Crawford, who each did it once; Jimmy Butler, who accomplished the feat twice; and Michael Jordan, who did it an amazing 30 times.
“We did a five-year deal for a reason. This is an investment in him and his future,” president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said. “If there are some growing pains or some assimilation challenges, that’s fine with us because we believe that once he gets used to it, we’re really excited about what we’ll get. We will have to be a little bit patient.”
For some players, though, it has been an ideal opportunity to get to know new teammates. Adbert Alzolay, currently on the 60-day injured list, and infielder Jonathan Villar are among Cubs players who have been spotted hanging out in the dugout despite not playing. Ross noticed when Villar stayed to watch an entire game this week.
“The outfield is still taking shape, how guys continue to get their legs under them and have the at-bats,” Ross said Wednesday. “Some of this roster stuff sometimes comes down to options and who has what left from that standpoint, and we’ll put it all together, but he’s done a nice job to put himself on the map.
