Right-hander Mark Leiter Jr. has pitched well in three Cactus League games and is positioned to be insurance at Triple A, potentially joining fellow nonroster invitee, right-hander Adrian Sampson, in the Iowa Cubs rotation. Leiter, who has a 1.35 ERA in 6⅔ innings, is scheduled to start Saturday against the Los Angeles Angels

“That’s the negative, is that you have very little time to prepare,” Berhalter said. “Guys will come over. They will have been playing on the weekend, and we’ll get them literally a week before the World Cup, and that’s a challenge. On the positive side, if we advance, you get a little bit more rest as you head into the next phase.”

“Had good, honest conversations face-to-face with Lucas,” Hahn said. “(Assistant general manager) Jeremy Haber as well did. And frankly and perhaps most interestingly, so did (Chairman) Jerry Reinsdorf. He and Lucas met 1-on-1, had a nice conversation about how negotiations sometimes get a little bogged down and tried to search for solutions out of it.

Culloton also said the family will not shortchange the Cubs if it lands Chelsea, a club with a massive payroll that has frequently operated at a loss. “We did a five-year deal for a reason. This is an investment in him and his future,” president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said. “If there are some growing pains or some assimilation challenges, that’s fine with us because we believe that once he gets used to it, we’re really excited about what we’ll get.
