Unlike other cameras, which monitor traffic flow or issue speeding tickets, license plate readers are designed to record the plate number, make, model and color of every vehicle that passes, and often compare them to the National Crime Information Center or a local police “hot sheet,” which may list stolen cars, suspended plates and people with outstanding arrest warrants or traffic violations.

Traffic and rush hour delays climbed into 2021, a trend Eisele expects to continue this year as schools and universities reopen, along with businesses. But ultimately, what traffic patterns look like will depend on the way residents’ lives have been reshaped by the pandemic: the rise in e-commerce and deliveries could mean more trucks, and remote working, telemedicine and other new patterns will shape daily driving, he said.

“The lessons here at home and across the world are a harbinger of what could happen here, particularly in low-vaccinated areas, if we don’t see a higher uptake of the vaccine across Illinois,” Pritzker said. “This is very real. I implore all residents, if you have friends and family on the fence, share with them the lifesaving benefits of these free vaccines and encourage them to remain masked until they are fully vaccinated.”

While the state has lifted capacity limits and most other COVID-19-related restrictions, “it’s imperative that we remember that this doesn’t mean that the pandemic is over,” Pritzker said. “Around the world, and here in Illinois, this virus is very much present, infecting people, hospitalizing some and, tragically, killing others every day.”

“Some are still looking for more creative ways to do a show,” said Michael Cartolano, president of Melrose Pyrotechnics of Kingsbury, Indiana. Examples might be to do a drive-up show, or to shoot only high-altitude fireworks than can be seen from a wide surrounding area. Some towns, such as Glencoe, are electing to wait and do Labor Day fireworks instead.
