“The O’Hare modernization program is a key component of United’s growth and our ongoing investments in Chicago,” Omar Idris, United’s vice president at O’Hare, said at the Thursday event. “This project is going to make the entire airfield more efficient, with improved runway, terminal and roadway systems. These changes will lead to reduced delays and increased capacity to meet the entire aviation community’s needs.”

Unlike those other properties, however, Wilson envisions the Wicker Park mansion for personal use. Under plans that his architect, Brian Foote of Woodhouse Tinucci Architects, submitted both to the Wicker Park Committee and to the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, Wilson is proposing the addition of 2,100-square-foot of space to the mansion in the form of two separate additions. One of the additions would be to the north and a separate connector addition would link the mansion to an existing coach house. The additions would include two new bedrooms, two new offices, a new primary bedroom suite, an art room, a home gym and two additional garage spaces.

The pace of hiring, though, has weakened — at least for now. Last week, the government reported that hiring slowed dramatically in August, with employers adding just 235,000 jobs after having added roughly a million in both June and July. Hiring plummeted in industries that require face-to-face contact with the public, notably restaurants, hotels and retail. Still, some jobs were added in other areas, and the unemployment rate actually dropped to 5.2% from 5.4%.

United is among a growing number of major companies implementing vaccine mandates for employees as COVID-19 cases rise amid the spread of the delta variant. Other companies requiring proof of vaccination include CVS, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Delta Air Lines, Tyson Foods and Deerfield-based Walgreens.
