A Black man was called a racial slur moments before he was fatally stabbed by a white assailant at a Kansas City gas station, according to witnesses.
42-year-old Jon Rone Jr. was stabbed on July 4 just outside of the Liquor Land gas station, per the Kansas City Star. According to court documents, witnesses saw the attacker speaking “disrespectfully” to Rone, including calling him the N-word before the stabbing.
An argument ensued, and one witness said she saw the attacker punch Rone, prompting a physical altercation between the two. Rone fell to the ground before the assailant pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the torso.
Rone collapsed inside the gas station. Several people attempted CPR on Rone before paramedics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have arrested a 36-year-old suspect who was allegedly in possession of a knife with blood on the blade. He hasn’t been charged as none of the eyewitnesses were able to positively identify the man as a suspect in a lineup.
