Tyrell Raby secures the victory for Grambling
Defensive Back Tyrell Raby returned a fumble 83 yards for a game winning touchdown in overtime as his Grambling State Tigers secured a 37-31 overtime victory over Kentucky State on Saturday night. On the third play of OT, Torrance Bardell completed a pass over the middle but Raby stripped Jon McCall and ran 83-yards for the winning touchdown. On the evening, the graduate student from Baton Rouge, by way of the University of Memphis, has two interceptions this year and one pass break-up.
Raby, who intercepted Ohio State QB Julian Sayin last week, was named the Aeneas Williams Award HBCU DB of the Week after posting 6 tackles and the aforementioned interception in Columbus.
Grambling State quarterback C’zavian Teasett accounted for four touchdowns on the night.
Howard wins the HBCU NYC Classic
Tyriq Starks threw for two TDs and ran for another to lead the Howard University football team to a 38-20 victory Saturday afternoon in the Fourth Annual HBCU NYC Classic at MetLife Stadium.
Morehouse’s offense mustered 182 yards on 61 plays (3.0 yards per play) and produced only one red-zone touchdown on two trips. The Maroon Tigers also had three fumbles, losing one.
Sean Johnson led Morehouse with 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks during Saturday’s game.
Alabama A&M beats Tennessee State
Victor Barbosa had three field goals as the Alabama A&M Bulldogs outlast the Tennessee State Tigers, 23-21, in The Legacy Series game at Nissan Stadium, the home of the Tennessee Titans. Alabama A&M quarterback Cornelius Brown completed 21-of-33 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns.
FAMU gets their first win of the season
RJ Johnson III threw for 272 yards and two touchdowns as his Florida A&M Rattlers beat the Albany State Rams 33-25 at Ken Riley Stadium in Tallahassee. With the win, FAMU gets their first victory of the season. Running back Thad Franklin Jr. had 76 yards and two touchdowns.
South Carolina State survives scare from Bethune-Cookman
South Carolina State was up 27-0 before Bethune-Cookman turned to backup quarterback Cam’Ron Ransom as the Wildcats searched for a spark.
Ransom had a spectacular night, throwing for 302 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 89 yards with two touchdowns. However, it was not enough as Ransom’s opposite number, quarterback Ryan Stubblefield threw for 286-yards and a touchdown, leading the South Carolina State Bulldogs to a thrilling 55-41 non-conference win over visiting Bethune-Cookman.
With the victory, South Carolina State improves to 2-1.
