After disappearing nearly three months ago, a Chinese University of Chicago student has been found safe and has reunited with his family, according to a university email sent to students Friday.
Diwen Fan and his family visited the university’s campus that same day “to show their gratitude to the entire University community,” wrote Jay Ellison, dean of students at the school.

“The University will continue to support Diwen and his family moving forward,” Ellison added. He thanked investigators at the University of Chicago Police Department for their help locating Fan.
Fan’s parents had offered a $10,000 reward for anyone with information about their son’s whereabouts, concerned he was experiencing a mental health illness.

The 20-year-old student, who was finishing his sophomore year at U. of C., had last been seen on May 5. His parents, who were in China, hadn’t been able to contact him and hired attorneys John Z. Huang and Yilun Hu, of the Huang & Hu PC law firm, to help find their son.
The lawyers hired a private investigator to help look for the student.
The attorneys had told the Tribune they believed Fan was somewhere between Kansas and Dallas after learning he’d possibly bought a Greyhound ticket with a final destination to San Antonio.
On Wednesday, Fan’s family declined to comment.
