National Weather Service officials warned of hazardous swimming conditions Tuesday due to high waves and dangerous currents at beaches along Lake Michigan in Illinois and Indiana.
Waves between 6 to 9 feet are expected along with dangerous currents making conditions life-threatening especially for inexperienced swimmers, officials said.
Officials cautioned people to stay out of the water and not venture out onto piers or any shoreline structures.
Early Tuesday, a teen was reported missing at Winnetka Beach after going into the water about 2 a.m., officials said. The Winnetka Fire Department and Coast Guard were searching for the teen.
Weather officials also said Tuesday fog would be an issue in portions of north-central and northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.
Midmorning conditions at Chicago’s airports were mostly cloudy at 68 degrees.
