There are thousands of supermarkets and grocery stores in America, meaning competition between chains is fierce. With the competitive landscape more crowded than a Costco on the weekend, it’s a great time to sift through inventory and rank the top 20 supermarket chains in the country. For the purposes of this list, The Daily Meal defined supermarkets as brick-and-mortar grocers, membership-only warehouse clubs and nationwide department stores that have supermarkets. In addition, The Daily Meal considered only supermarkets that have outposts in multiple states and that have at least five locations. The stores were judged on stock, departments, innovation, customer service, and contribution to the community.
