Murder Charges Dropped Against Mother, Son after Video Suggests Self-Defense

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office has dropped all charges against a woman and her 14-year-old son after they were charged with murdering a man at a West Pullman fast food spot.

“Based upon our continued review and in light of emerging evidence, today the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office (CCSAO) has moved to dismiss the charges against Carlisha (sic) Hood and her 14-year-old son,” said the Cook County’s State’s Attorney Office in a statement.

“Based upon the facts, evidence, and the law, we are unable to meet our burden of proof in the prosecution of these cases.”

Last week, Carlishia Hood, a valid FOID/CCL holder, ordered her son to shoot  32-year-old Jeremy Brown on June 18 at the Maxwell Street Express on the 11600 block of South Halsted Street, which resulted in their murder charges. Prosecutors also charged Hood with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

However, a video reportedly showed Brown repeatedly punching Hood in the face before he was shot to death.

That video went viral. In the days following the incident, the case drew national attention, especially from people sympathizing with Hood and her son declaring what they did was an act of self-defense.

On Monday, Foxx’s office announced that all charges were dropped against them, drawing reaction across social media.
