Chicago police are questioning a “person of interest” in connection with a string of Northwest Side armed robberies in which the robber used the threat of a machete to scare victims into handing over their belongings.
Police have released details about five such recent attacks, although some reports say there have been as many as nine robberies committed by a machete-wielding man. The crime blog CWBChicago first reported on the attacks.

But after weeks of sporadic attacks in neighborhoods including Irving Park, Avondale and Hermosa, authorities Wednesday confirmed they have been questioning a person in connection with the armed robberies and an announcement regarding charges could be forthcoming.
“Detectives are speaking to a person of interest. (Superintendent David Brown) will have more details later this morning,” Kellie Bartoli, a police spokeswoman, said in an email.

Brown announced he will hold an 11 a.m. news conference to provide an update on the investigation into the robberies. Check back for updates.
