A Lake Barrington man dreamed that burglars were breaking into his home and awoke to discover that he had shot himself in the leg, the Lake County sheriff’s office said Tuesday.
The man is now facing firearms charges, police said.
Police said they responded to the residence of Mark M. DiCara, 62, in the 100 block of Shoreline Road, at about 9:50 p.m. on April 10. Officers found DiCara with a gunshot wound to the leg that was bleeding significantly and required a tourniquet.
DiCara told police that he dreamed that someone was breaking into his home, and that he retrieved his .357-Magnum revolver and fired at the intruder in his dream. However, he awoke to find that he had shot himself in the leg, police said.
The round passed through DiCara’s leg and lodged in his bed. Fortunately, the bullet did not go through a shared wall into an adjacent residence, police said. There was no break-in, police said.
During subsequent investigation, authorities found that DiCara possessed the gun but his FOID card has been revoked. He was charged with that felony, along with reckless discharge of a firearm.
He was arrested and processed Monday, and was released after posting bond. He is next due in court on June 29.
