Brandon Johnson became Chicago mayor-elect on Tuesday, receiving 51% of the vote over Paul Vallas’ 49%.
In securing his win, Johnson ran the table in wards on the South, West and North sides, while Vallas won on the Northwest and Southwest sides of the city, unofficial results from the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners show. Results will not be certified until all mail-in ballots are counted by the elections board.
The win for Johnson, a Cook County commissioner from the West Side, came after he came in second to Vallas in February’s first round when Vallas won 33% of the vote to Johnson’s 22%, while Mayor Lori Lightfoot only received 17% of the vote. Lightfoot became the first Chicago mayoral incumbent to lose a reelection bid since Jane Byrne lost her run for a second term in 1983 to Harold Washington.
