If there was any expectation of invincibility for the Americans heading into the Tokyo Olympics, it’s already gone after Nigeria shocked the U.S. on Saturday night. Nigeria beat the U.S. 90-87, pulling off an international shocker with a roster primarily filled of little-known NBA players that found a way to defeat a group of All-NBA, All-Star and max-contract performers.
“We come out and play our game, it doesn’t matter who’s across the line from us,” Goodwin said. “We don’t play down to our competition, we don’t have to play up to our competition. We feel like we’re the best team every time we step between the lines, and that’s how we approach the game. We come to win and we come to play hard.”
Of course, Zaila could bring her talents to both Ogden Honors College and the Tigers’ women’s basketball program, which is hoping for improvement after missing the past two NCAA tournaments. The Tigers hired coach Kim Mulkey, a three-time national champion at Baylor, this summer.
Unfortunately for baseball fans, Guerrero plays for the Blue Jays, who relocated from Toronto to Dunedin, Fla., and Buffalo, N.Y., during the pandemic, playing home games in two minor-league ballparks. The Jays aren’t in a market ESPN cares about, so they rarely if ever are on “Sunday Night Baseball.” So try to catch Guerrero early in the All-Star Game before he disappears from view again.
“To be myself, always kept it 100, kept it real, I never switched, I always stayed me throughout it all,” Anderson said. “Just go out and work every day, bring what I got to the ballpark day in and day out. Couldn’t be in a better place right now.”
“Since the beginning, I felt good,” Céspedes said. “Comfortable. But now here in the game, I’m sometimes a little anxious. I’ve been trying to adjust as quickly as possible as part of the learning process. To have to make those adjustments during the game, that’s the part I’ve been working at overall. I usually feel pretty good at home plate. The learning part of making adjustments, that’s where I’m working right now.
“I was really proud of myself,” said Barty, who climbed her way up the stands to hug her coach, Craig Tyzzer, and others, “the way I was able to reset and just keep going, just keep chipping away, at the start of that third set and hold my nerve there in the end.”
The Yankees dealt Chapman and Miller in their famous summer sell-off in 2016, with Miller winding up as setup man for the Cleveland Indians. Kimbrel, like Miller, already is getting closers money. His $16 million club option for 2022, if it doesn’t vest, likely will be picked up by whoever acquires him instead of making him a typical two-month rental.
“Players (are going to) be players, man,” LaVine said. “You’re going to mingle and talk. But we’re here for one goal — we’re trying to win the gold medal. Whatever comes from that, friendships, teammates, that’s an afterthought. But you know how the NBA is — everybody talks and it’s a player’s league, so we understand what goes on. Something happens, it happens.”
“The debut was special, it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but I think I had to keep my emotions in check more tonight,” Sheets said. “That first at-bat I was more jittery than I was in Chicago. But that home run was a really cool moment, not just for me but for my family.”
