Former second-round pick Anthony Miller was cast off to the Houston Texans, and since his arrival Damiere Byrd has been the logical candidate to join Allen Robinson and Darnell Mooney. Byrd had a career-high 47 receptions for 604 yards last season with the New England Patriots and has the quickness and speed to excel in the slot. Byrd could emerge as a nice signing. He won’t be the only option in three-receiver sets, and that’s where it is interesting because playing time will be up for grabs. Byrd should emerge ahead of Riley Ridley, Javon Wims, Marquise Goodwin, Dazz Newsome and others, but keep an eye out for someone excelling in the next several weeks. It’s also worth noting Byrd is probably best working in the slot, which is where Miller operated.
“He’s rested,” La Russa said of Hendriks. “If he wasn’t rested, you couldn’t do it. But still, that’s one reason we left Michael in there: Every out you could buy in the eighth is one less for (Hendriks) to get. But as soon as one guy got on, he was going to be in there. And the key is he was rested. Without that, not possible.”

“I’ll go by something I’ve learned to trust, which is (Charlotte manager) Wes Helms’ reports every time someone comes up from Charlotte, it’s right on, whether it’s a player or a pitcher,” La Russa said. “And he reports that Eloy is moving well in the outfield, so I think we have the freedom to probably just get really close with (head athletic trainer) Dr. (James) Kruk here and see what’s best.

Cohen’s numbers fell off the following season when he had just 669 yards from scrimmage despite recording 79 catches and 64 carries. Before his ACL injury last season, he had 14 carries for 74 yards and six receptions for 41 yards. The Bears signed him to a three-year, $17.25 million contract extension a week before his knee injury occurred.
“The coolest thing that I saw is the group were always staying together, always trying,” Bote said Sunday. “It was really encouraging to see a group that when we were struggling there for a couple of weeks everybody in the clubhouse was like, ‘Hey, let’s find a way to win today.’ It didn’t go our way in a lot of ways, but the group that was out there grinding for nine innings, it was really encouraging to watch. It was kind of like uplifting to me.
