“It was a clinic tonight for me,” Ross said. “He only had a couple of punchouts, was off the barrels a lot. A lot of ground balls, good defense behind him. Got in some fastball counts, threw some sinkers in. Weak contact is still a thing, you don’t have to miss barrels all the time. He just commanded the zone really well, threw strikes when he had to and the secondary stuff was real.”
Before that, Fields’ most exciting play was wiped out on a Titans challenge. On third-and-8 on the Bears’ third drive, he threw 11 yards to Adams, who dived to catch the ball as he tumbled out of bounds. It originally was ruled a catch, but replay showed Adams’ elbow hit out of bounds before he completed the catch.
“It was another day on an easy, soft golf course, so you needed to make a bunch of birdies,” said Cantlay, who shot a 6-under 66 for the round. “I thought I played really well, all in all. I didn’t make too many mistakes. Played solid, didn’t putt as well as I did the first couple days, but probably hit it a little better, and I thought it was a good day and I’m in a good spot for tomorrow.”
“Of course I think about it. It’s what everybody plays for. Once you get a taste of the postseason, that’s all you want to do from there on out. So I’ve definitely thought about it, but letting myself get rolled up into that idea is the least of my worries right now. I’ve just got to make sure that I’m myself come Oct. 3, the last game of the year, and whatever happens, happens.
“The reason I used that is because as you get closer to the end and you’ve got a shot, you’ve got to be more specific about your preparation,” La Russa said Friday. “Teams have more information, they’ve got four months-plus of looks at you, at your pitching, your hitting and vice versa, so the preparation changes.
“I’m surprised how good it feels,” Neal Verdict, a season ticket holder from Lincoln Park, said before the game. “I was looking forward to it, but just being out with the people and everything, it’s a lot of fun. Love to see everybody out here.
