Former Giants All-Pro Landon Collins was this week’s scapegoat for Washington’s defensive dysfunction, with head coach Ron Rivera publicly insisting Collins belongs at linebacker and not safety. Meanwhile, no one takes less heat for the defense’s disappointing season than its coordinator, Jack Del Rio … Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady is the pick of LSU alumni at the moment to succeed outgoing head coach Ed Orgeron with the Tigers, according to sources. Brady, 32, rose to stardom as the offensive coordinator of Joe Burrow’s national championship offense in 2019. He is in his second season running Matt Rhule’s offense with the Panthers. Will it be his last? … Brian Flores’ Dolphins (1-5) are one of the most disappointing teams in the league, and there is some strange stuff going on in Miami. While Flores has co-offensive coordinators in George Godsey and Eric Studesville, for example, neither of them called the plays the first four weeks. QBs coach Charlie Frye did, per the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, apparently due to his rapport with Tua Tagovailoa. Flores kept that a secret until this week. Miami’s defense is bad, too, though, giving up 29.5 points per game, tied for third worst in the NFL with the Giants.
Also in 8A, ninth-seeded Lincoln-Way East (7-2), which won the 2019 state championship, will start its quest for back-to-back titles with a home game against Oswego East (6-3). Fourth-seeded Lockport (8-1) hosts 29th-seeded Lyons (5-4), and 18th-seeded Marist (6-3) visits 15th-seeded Glenbard East (7-2).
The Braves will be going for their first Series title since 1995, when they beat the Cleveland Indians with a team that included Hall of Famers Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Jon Smoltz and Chipper Jones — a no-nonsense group that became better known for numerous postseason flops during a momentous run of 14 straight division titles.
Grad quarterback Coan completed 20 of 28 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown, a 4-yard pass to Avery Davis that put the Irish up 7-0 in the first quarter. Jonathan Doerer hit a 21-yard field goal in the second quarter. Freshman Tyler Buchner scored on a 3-yard run with 4 minutes, 52 seconds remaining to close out the Irish scoring.
“We didn’t shoot it great, but I thought defensively we hung in there,” Bulls coach Billy Donovan said. “When you have a night like we did shooting the basketball, you want to be able to give yourself an opportunity to win. Without question, the defense did that.”
Jordan’s legacy, other than the six rings, is making the Bulls into an iconic, New York Yankees-like brand. They led the NBA in average attendance from 2009-10 through 2017-18 before falling to second behind the Philadelphia 76ers in 2018-19. But they dropped all the way to 11th in 2019-20, the last season before the COVID-19 pandemic forced teams to play in empty stadiums or with crowd restrictions, proving there’s only so much losing basketball a fan base can take.
Bullish backs Chase Brown and McCray blasted through wide-open holes and flanked Penn State’s defense for a combined 365 rushing yards and a touchdown, and James McCourt kicked three field goals, including 39- and 32-yarders in overtime, on a soggy day at Beaver Stadium. The Illini (3-5, 2-3 Big Ten) outgained the Nittany Lions 370 yards to 207 in regulation and battled back from an early 10-0 deficit.
“That hasn’t happened very often in my career,” Brady said. “For some reason it happened in that moment. That was a tough loss, and I think we learned a lot from that loss last year. There (were) a lot of self-inflicted issues, there (were) a lot of penalties, there was a lot of miscommunication, there (were) a lot of things that weren’t clean. And then ultimately, we have a chance to win the game in two-minute (drill) by going down and kicking a field goal, and we don’t get the job done.”
“I don’t have words to express the sadness, helplessness and indignation that is overwhelming me,” wrote Sotomayor, who was formerly Minister of Sport. “Álex Quiñónez was the synonym of humility and a clear example of resilience. His loss leaves us with pain in our chests.”
Stylistically, there was no question the superstar would be a perfect fit in Chicago. Parker established herself as an elite facilitator in transition, which paired well with a Sky offense that thrived playing up-tempo basketball. More important, Parker, who won Defensive Player of the Year in 2020, was the missing interior presence the Sky needed after they allowed the 10th-most points in the paint in the WNBA bubble.
