Players and teams enter deadline day far apart on many key issues and unresolved on others. The most contentious proposals involve luxury tax thresholds and rates, the size of a new bonus pool for pre-arbitration players, minimum salaries, salary arbitration eligibility and the union’s desire to change the club revenue sharing formula.

Backup catcher Yan Gomes could be a DH option, too, though there is a little risk in putting both catchers in the lineup if one gets hurt. Gomes, 34, has had an OPS+ at the league average or higher in three of the last four seasons. He also averaged 14 home runs and 18 doubles in a part-time role with three organizations over the last four seasons, excluding the shortened 2020 season.
If he’s such a master negotiator, why wasn’t Manfred involved in talks all along? If you didn’t know better, you’d think that the owners want games postponed to force the players union to cave in to their demands and that they sent in Manfred at the last minute just for show. Talks ended Saturday with no progress toward a deal, making a postponement of opening day likely.
“He’s really good at those in-between shots that you kind of want to give up your defense — the contested floaters, especially in between midranges,” White said. “And he’s really good at getting downhill. We honestly could have done a better job of being more physical, getting into the ball more. … He’s a really good player. Once he gets it going, he’s hard to stop.”
“Patrick is an important piece to our team,” Donovan said. “He’s a young player. He’s had to deal with a lot in his first two years here in the NBA — whether it’s shortened season last year, COVID, limited practice, no summer league, shortened training camp — and Patrick’s always been a team guy. The decisions we have to make are going to be what’s best for the team.”
