The first $10,200 of unemployment benefits per resident — $20,400 for those married and filing jointly — are now nontaxable for returns with an adjusted gross income of less than $150,000, according to a retroactive provision included in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
In the last year, DuPage County Animal Services “has received 148 rabbits, primarily from owners surrendering them and accidental litters,” the agency wrote on Facebook. “Spaying and neutering rabbits is a costly and specialized procedure, but it’s so important to their health, temperament, and curbing overpopulation.”
“COVID-19 vaccines are the most important tool to help end the pandemic, and requiring students to be vaccinated will best support the health of our community and position us for in-person classroom and co-curricular activities for the Fall Term,” the administrators wrote.

Symptoms include weakness, numbness or paralysis in the face, arm or leg, typically on one side of the body; slurred or garbled speech or difficulty understanding others; blindness in one or both eyes or double vision; and vertigo or loss of balance or coordination, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The CARES Act, signed into law last March, expanded unemployment benefits due to income loss related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among other things, the law added $600 to regular unemployment checks, and expanded unemployment funds to workers, such as independent contractors, who aren’t usually eligible for the benefits.
“This mixing is not permitted under the Governmental Ethics Ordinance,” the board said, citing an advisory opinion on social media use. “Our board’s opinion states that political/campaign content cannot be posted to an official city social media account, in this case, an official ward Facebook page.”
Among the items Nitzkin bought with the ill-gotten funds: luxury vacations with his family to Ireland, Las Vegas, Puerto Rico and Florida; personal golfing expenses; thousands of dollars in tickets to Chicago Bulls games and other sporting events; personal medical expenses; health club dues; meals; car maintenance; and real estate taxes on his private residence, according to the plea agreement.
Even though he was found guilty of three counts, under Minnesota statutes he’ll only be sentenced on the most serious one — second-degree murder. Under Minnesota sentencing guidelines, he would have faced a presumptive sentence of 12 1/2 years on that count, and Cahill could have sentenced him to as little as 10 years and eight months or as much as 15 years and still stayed within the guideline range.
Ballbaki met with another man in a campus parking lot to buy methamphetamine but fled on foot with the drugs without paying, according to an Elmhurst police news release. He called the cops to report a man with a gun on campus, but Ballbaki later admitted to police in follow-up interviews that he never saw a firearm, police said.
