John P. Ruane, a 78-year-old Elmhurst resident, suffered from numerous medical conditions and had recently been staying at his brother’s home in Arlington Heights, police said. Ruane’s brother discovered on the morning of May 18 that his vehicle and brother were missing, police said, adding that Ruane’s brother contacted the Arlington Heights Police Department to report him missing.

“Throughout the pandemic, I’ve been committed to following public health protocols,” Whitmer said in a statement Sunday. “Yesterday, I went with friends to a local restaurant. As more people arrived, the tables were pushed together. Because we were all vaccinated, we didn’t stop to think about it. In retrospect, I should have thought about it. I am human. I made a mistake, and I apologize.”

Longstreet appeared before Judge David Navarro on Monday afternoon for a bond hearing. At the hearing, a prosecutor said Longstreet threw water at the woman, punched her and threw her to ground before retrieving a gun, pointing it at her and threatening to kill her. He then fired multiple shots into the group, with a bullet piercing the woman’s liver and lodging under her heart, the prosecutor said.

“Dogs in their perfect world would just be sitting on your laps, and that’s really what they did for a year,” said Betsy Puterbaugh, co-owner of Yuppy Puppy, a dog day care, boarding and grooming business in Lake Bluff. “No matter what you do, you’re about to mess up their perfect world.”

Nationwide, roughly three to four times as many students as usual took a gap year during the 2020-2021 school year, according to Ethan Knight, executive director of the Gap Year Association. With international travel — often a staple of traditional gap year programs — on hold during the coronavirus pandemic, more students than ever made an independent itinerary for their year off from traditional school.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot campaigned in support of an elected school board but has since offered support for a hybrid system that would allow her to appoint five members of a seven-member board, with the other two elected, to take effect in 2026. In 2028, the board would expand to 11 seats, eight appointed and three elected. It could then revert to a seven-member board four years later.

In June 2020, more than a year after the first meeting and additional outcries from Richardson, the office launched a formal investigation and later that year the university declined to renew her contract. The school determined the coach, Pamela Bonnevier, violated university policies on discrimination and harassment, according to NU officials. Her attorneys did not respond to a request for comment.
