Police received calls about a person who was shot and found Samuel Ortiz-Rodriguez, 46, of North Aurora, in the 400 block of South Spencer Street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Aurora paramedics arrived on scene and took Ortiz-Rodriguez, of the 300 block of Hidden Creek Lane, to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

But, speaking at the morning rally, Carla Langston said the city’s Black communities have already suffered through a host of bad decisions since the district came under mayoral control in 1995, from mass school closures to the introduction of “student based budgeting.” White students have left the school system “in droves,” and policies have failed the majority Latino and Black student body, she said.

About 1:20 a.m., a 32-year-old man was riding east on his bike on Logan Boulevard, approaching the intersection at North Western Avenue, police said. A silver Hyundai Sonata driving south on Western Avenue was coming up on a green light and drove into the intersection, hitting the bicyclist as he ran a red light, a witness and the driver both told responding officers, according to a crash report.

Cook County’s six mass vaccination sites began late January with the Tinley Park site. Since then, five more locations have cropped up to give out a total 578,222 doses as of Sunday. The return of a classic Chicago beach season will run through Labor Day, with 22 lakeshore spots in the city reopening all amenities except drinking fountains, which will remain shut off, according to a Wednesday news release from the mayor’s office. Lakefront concessions will offer indoor and outdoor dining options starting Memorial Day weekend as well. But the Juneway, Rogers, Howard and Fargo beaches on the Far North Side will not reopen because of rising water levels and erosion.

Enlivant has more than 200 facilities across the country, including in Rockford and Joliet. Fisher, who works at an Enlivant facility in Tennessee, helps residents with daily tasks, such as dressing and going to the bathroom.
