“The police commander of the 18th District came to me and said the density of these pedicabs, especially on the weekend nights, has gotten out of control,” said Reilly, 42nd. “They can’t get ambulance, fire service or police cars through Hubbard Street or Kinzie Street or Illinois Street, and that’s a safety concern.”

Last year, under then-President Donald Trump’s administration, Chicago and other cities received a surge of federal agents to fight violence as part of Operation Legend, named in honor of 4-year-old LeGend Taliferro, who was shot and killed in Kansas City, Missouri. In Chicago, the operation involved a few hundred federal agents from the ATF, Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Marshals Service.
In 1905, plans were made to move Drake Fountain to accommodate construction of a new county building. But where would it end up? During a heated meeting in December 1905, aldermen balked at the $3,300 cost to remove then maintain the fountain. Sculptor Lorado Taft said the city could afford to let this Columbus statue be put out to pasture, “It is not an absolute disgrace, but it is a question whether it would be approved today by the municipal art commission. For one thing, it is wholly out of proportion.” Public works commissioner J.M. Patterson noted, “while it is not a distinguished work of art, (the fountain’s) existence is justified by the fact that thousands of persons drink its water daily,” the Tribune reported. The fountain was temporarily relocated to the LaSalle Street side of city hall.

“The only person … that I have actually issued a fine to, in a dollar amount, was the Walgreens on Simpson Street,” Stoneback said. “They continuously violated, just throwing their stuff out in the street, trash would be all over the place. I sent them warnings, numerous communications, (but) they just kept doing it. As soon as they got their first fine, they corrected it.”

”I tell you, this is becoming an effort where we’re going to need an all-hands-on-deck approach. And that approach is going to involve our community,” said Cato. “Our community getting involved and saying what’s going on. Our community who has cell phone pictures, who has Facebook information. We’re going to need your help.”
The entire project could take 20 years to build, costing $7 billion and extending well past the former hospital campus’ 49-acre lot, ultimately covering more than 100 acres total, Goodman said. Singer Pavilion — the campus’ only remaining Reese building, built in 1948 — will be preserved as part of the development, according to the Department of Planning and Development.
