4Runner TRD Pro Is This The Best Off-Road SUV Ever Made?
The Toyota 4Runner has a legendary reputation as a rugged, go-anywhere SUV. For 2025, the TRD Pro trim will enhance that legacy with modern technology and enhanced off-road prowess. If you’re considering a true adventure vehicle, this review is for you.

Powertrain and Performance:
Gone is the old V6. Under the 2025 TRD Pro hood resides a 2.4-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain, a significant departure for the 4Runner. This new setup delivers a robust 326 horsepower and a substantial 465 lb.-ft. of torque at a low 1,700 RPM. This translates to excellent low-end grunt, crucial for conquering challenging terrain. Mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and a standard 4WD system, the TRD Pro promises confident traction in any condition. While official testing will tell the full story, the EPA estimates suggest a respectable 23 mpg across city, highway, and combined driving, a potential improvement over the previous generation.

Off-Road Prowess:
The TRD Pro badge signifies serious off-road capability, and the 2025 model doesn’t disappoint. Upgraded 3-way adjustable Fox 2.5-inch internal bypass Q3S shocks with rear piggy-back remote reservoirs headline the suspension enhancements. These sophisticated dampers provide exceptional control and comfort over rough terrain. A Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism further improves articulation, allowing the wheels to maintain contact with the ground even on extreme inclines.

Toyota’s suite of off-road technologies, including Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, a locking rear differential, and a Multi-Terrain Monitor, give drivers the tools they need to tackle any obstacle. The TRD Pro aluminum front skid plate and underbody protection for the transfer case and fuel tank provide peace of mind when navigating rocky trails. The 18-inch black TRD Pro alloy wheels wrapped in 33-inch Toyo tires complete the capable off-road package.

Exterior Styling:
The TRD Pro retains the 4Runner’s iconic boxy silhouette but with modern touches. The heritage-inspired “TOYOTA” front grille with an integrated light bar and Rigid Industries LED fog lights provide excellent visibility. LED headlights with sequential turn signals add a touch of modern flair. The TRD black performance exhaust looks good and contributes to a more aggressive sound. A power tilt/slide moonroof adds an open-air feel to the cabin. Our test model, finished in Ice Cap with a black interior, presents a clean and rugged aesthetic.

Interior and Technology:
Inside, the TRD Pro offers a blend of comfort and functionality. SofTex-trimmed seats with 8-way power adjustability for the driver and front passenger and heated and ventilated front seats provide a comfortable driving experience. A TRD Pro leather-trimmed steering wheel adds a sporty touch.

The centerpiece of the interior is the massive 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen, which houses navigation, entertainment, and vehicle settings. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are standard, along with a 14-speaker JBL sound system, including a portable Bluetooth speaker. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster provides clear and customizable driver information. A welcome addition is the 240W/120v AC power supply, offering convenient power for devices and equipment.

Safety:
The 2025 4Runner TRD Pro comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, a comprehensive suite of advanced safety features.

First Impressions:
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro represents a significant step forward for this iconic SUV. The new hybrid powertrain promises improved performance and efficiency, while the enhanced off-road equipment solidifies its position as a true adventure vehicle. The updated technology and interior refinements add a touch of modern comfort and convenience. If you’re seeking a rugged and capable SUV that’s ready for anything, the 2025 4Runner TRD Pro deserves a serious look. We look forward to spending more time behind the wheel for a full in-depth review.
