To many, police officers simply are not equipped to respond to calls of people experiencing mental health-related distress. They argue the very presence of police, with sirens, flashing lights and guns, can increase anxiety and tension. In communities of color, the concern over how police will respond to a person in crisis is even greater, considering the long-standing mistrust minority communities have for officers and the fact that recent high-profile police-abuse deaths have involved Black victims.

Their approach to tutoring has been thoughtful and honed. Kathleen O’Connor, a former professor and teacher with a doctorate in child development psychology, noticed that although many kids spoke multiple languages, they lacked basic literacy and numeracy skills. In what is called high-dosage tutoring, kids get anywhere from two to four hours a day of tutoring in math and reading, five days a week, with at least one tutor for every two students.

The association urged greater COVID-19 vaccinations, saying 98% of coronavirus-related hospitalizations since January have been unvaccinated patients. About 52% of Indiana residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the 16th lowest rate among the states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Though the turnout at Wednesday’s rally was relatively small, one of the groups that organized it, Raise Your Hand for Illinois Public Education, said two online petitions seeking a virtual learning option — one started by Raise Your Hand and another aimed specifically at Indian Prairie District 204 in the Aurora-Naperville area — have gained more than 6,000 signatures.
