“There are many, many barriers that we cannot legislate our way out of that exist in obtaining that cooperation,” Kersten said. “Short of video evidence or other witnesses that are willing to come forward, if we don’t have that complainant’s version of events, we often have nothing with which to proceed on a case.”
Chicago Public Schools, the biggest school district in Illinois and third in the U.S. with 638 schools and 341,000 students, has already been planning for a mostly in-person fall. CEO Janice Jackson, who is leaving CPS in June, said earlier in May that CPS was “looking to the state … to get us back to normal from a schooling perspective where everyone is expected to go to school in a brick-and-mortar building every single day unless there are extenuating circumstances, medical circumstances, that prevent them from coming to school.”
The two officers had been working in the Lawndale neighborhood when they were dispatched to the ShotSpotter alert about 7:25 a.m., Chicago police Superintendent David Brown said Sunday. When they saw a man in a vacant lot near the location the alert indicated, they approached him and were immediately fired upon, Brown said.
“We’ve gotta make sure that people are continuing to follow the public health guidance that has gotten us this far and masks I think are a big and important part of that,” the mayor said on cable news. “To say, well, if you’re vaccinated, you don’t have to wear a mask, that’s great, but what about all the other people that are out there that aren’t vaccinated and there’s no way to know that? So I think for the time being, most people are gonna continue to wear a mask outside, outside their homes, and I think that’s smart.”
An additional 32,253 coronavirus vaccine doses were administered Wednesday, bringing the total to 10,407,841. Over the last seven days, the state reached an average of 61,275 vaccines administered daily, the lowest since an average of 61,132 was reported Feb. 17, when supplies of the vaccines were still well below demand.

About 1 a.m., the 29-year-old officer from Chicago was speeding north on Wilkie Road in a black Toyota 4Runner, Arlington Heights police said in a news release. As the vehicle approached Kirchoff Road, it veered off the road and struck a utility pole, flipped over and ultimately landed in the backyard of a home in the 600 block of South Reuter Drive, police said.

Officers were sent to the restaurant, 2810 U.S. Highway 34, about 11:50 a.m. Sunday for “a report of two males fighting outside of the drive-thru lane,” according to a statement from Oswego police. It said the employee was an 18-year-old and the customer was 48.
