The latter point was a nod toward — but not an explicit endorsement of — the thousands of protesters who last year began calling for U.S. police department budgets to be reallocated to other social services. That position, earlier nicknamed the “defund police” movement, has been criticized by Republicans and some Democrats, including Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, as unrealistic and dangerous for public safety. Obama, too, has said the “defund” slogan was counterproductive.

Officers are directed not to chase anyone suspected of committing less than a Class A misdemeanor, a crime that carries a sentence of less than a year in jail, the policy states. Examples are business license offenses, parking violations or trespassing. Actual Class A misdemeanors, which do allow officers to give chase, include aggravated assault, battery, domestic battery, among others.

The new fall date holds significance, as October is LGBTQ History Month. Organizers urge everyone to continue to celebrate and observe Pride Month in June, as well as explore LGBTQ history in the symbolic month of October, paying tribute to the activists of the past that have made progress possible. October is also when National Coming Out Day is, which influenced the decision to have the parade then, Frye said.

“His honest recollections — in response to vague and imprecise questions about events that allegedly took place many years ago — simply do not constitute perjury,” the statement read. “This case, of course, is not about him — but about the government’s continued pursuit of his former boss. Tim Mapes has in no way engaged in obstruction of justice, and looks forward to prevailing at trial when all of the facts are aired.”
