“It remains a variant of concern because we think it is likely more transmissible, more contagious than delta based on the pattern that we were seeing in South Africa,” Arwady said. “We may see more breakthrough infections in people who are vaccinated, and we may see more repeat infections in people who previously had COVID. We don’t have any real evidence at this point that it’s making people sicker, but they’re still doing the work to figure that out.”

The man said he was inside his car in the drive-thru lane, picking up some tacos after working an earlier shift as a limo driver, when he saw a person walk in front of his car with what looked like a crowbar in his hand and begin striking the drive-thru window with it. The person then turned toward the victim’s car, looked at him, and hit the car’s hood and fender with the crowbar, the victim said.

“I started trying to help her get out and she said, ‘Just tend to my son,’” Vera said. “So I went back across the street. He didn’t want me to leave his sight. He wanted me to stay right next to him. I was holding him until the ambulance came and got him. He was a wonderful boy. I just kept telling him, ‘It’s OK, you did good,’ telling him a lot of positive things.”
