Around 1964, the elementary school’s leaders devised a code of conduct inspired by Boone, advising students to practice “truth in thought” and “honesty in actions,” the Tribune reported at the time. “The school’s second rule, ‘We believe in the worth and dignity of every individual’ would also please the man who befriended more Indians than he fought,” the Tribune wrote.
The weekly testing program has also been open to vaccinated staff members as well as students. About 1,700 adults, including 12 last week, tested positive through the free program since the beginning of the school year, CPS data shows. It’s unclear how many of these staff members were unvaccinated.
“While it may make some uncomfortable, large commercial properties are paying their fair share for the first time in a long time, because Assessor Kaegi is following the law,” Alicia Webb, campaign spokeswoman, said. “When the very wealthy, big corporations, and political insiders were let off the hook for so many years, working and middle class families and small business owners had to pick up the tab. Under Fritz, that’s come to an end.”
“All risk is local,” Arwady added. “When any disease is surging in the world, how likely is it that someone will come to Chicago with that disease. We built that into our modeling. The focus moving forward: Continuing to work not just on vaccination, but all of the reasons that underlay differing vaccination rates, rebuilding or building trust in health care, in public health, in government and thinking about access in new ways, creative ways and recognizing that until in a long-term way we commit to having all Chicagoans have equal opportunities, we will not reach a healthy Chicago.
“Gil Villegas, let me know when you’re serious, when you’re serious about coming into the room and working on the map,” Harris said at a City Hall news conference. “The Chicago United map represents coalitions and compromise, and in that spirit, I’m committed to working with all of my colleagues toward a resolution short of a lengthy and costly political campaign.”
To qualify for social equity, an applicant must have majority ownership by someone who’s been living in a designated area with high poverty or high arrest rates for cannabis offenses, or has had an arrest for a low-level cannabis offense, or has a family member with such a case. State officials also will create new alternative criteria to be announced in the near future.

Toledo was the youngest person to be fatally shot by Chicago police in years.
