Through Medicaid, Illinois already spends $2.5 billion per year to care for about 45,000 people in nursing homes, the state reported, an average cost of about $55,000 — plus another $880 million in federal funds in the first year of COVID. Advocates say the new money would go directly to patient care, rather than to corporate owners.
