Last week, following the release of a lackluster jobs report for April, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce called for an end to the $300 weekly supplement to unemployment insurance benefit, arguing it was providing an incentive for people to not actively seek work. Companies have sweetened wages and offered perks such as sign-on bonuses as a result.
In North Carolina, at least five school systems announced Thursday that they would shift to remote learning as the gasoline supply crisis continued. Among them: Durham, Franklin, Vance and Wake counties, which canceled in-person learning for Friday. The email sent to parents in the Wake County system, the largest in North Carolina, cites “the impact of the gas shortage on staffing availability and student transportation.”

The hackers, which the FBI said are linked to a group called DarkSide, specialize in digital extortion and are believed to be located in Russia or Eastern Europe. On Wednesday, media outlets including the Washington Post and Reuters reported that the company had no immediate intention of paying the ransom. Those reports were based on anonymous sources.
